Different genres my team and I would like to explore
Our main pitch is: A person struggling with bills and family and loses their life to gambling. This is the pitch we plan on working with. Of all the genres, we decided to focus our studies on drama, thriller, and action. All of these felt like they could work really well with our pitch. We mostly choose these three because we were most familiar with them. I have worked with action and drama, while Danniella and I have worked and studied thriller. I'll now go into detail about these genres and our thoughts on them.
Choosing action is probably our least likely choice. It would be a lot of work in both getting and properly expressing high-adrenaline shots. Moreover, with only five minutes to work with, the action could end up feeling rushed and unnecessary. Choosing action could only benefit us since I have experience in it and could really act as a back-up. It works well with our pitch because the idea of struggling and drama can show high paced physical scenes where a character may be angered with something that took place, affecting the final outcome.
Our pitch surrounds a generally dark story, but not enough to go into horror. The pitch is suspenseful and scary, but not to the extent a psychological horror would be. Because of this, we wanted to look into the thriller genre. Thriller is usually very dark and intense, focusing on twists and dark lighting to engage our audience. Gambling in it of itself does just that, so we would be able to lean into that aspect of the pitch more. Thriller also offers a better chance to explore a different route if we ever wanted to move closer to horror.
Finally, we have the drama genre. Drama is our most likely choice for this pitch. Drama is broad enough to cover family and economical struggles, while still allowing for all the action, suspense, and ideas that would be explored through this pitch.. Adding the gambling behind it creates a cause and effect that can carry the movie through the simple formula: rise, climax, and fall. Choosing drama, we can also explore other factors of the pitch, such as how the main character's family is structured and the familial issues at play. More than likely though we'll be focusing on what's up front. An economical struggle from gambling that leaves a family broken truly screams drama.
